Costa Mesa, Calif. — The Vanguard University baseball team stepped up and toed the foul line of the newly renovated Dean Harvey Field for the first time on January 15, 2018. would be a day they would never forget. With state-of-the-art features such as a fully redesigned scoreboard system, new bleachers, professional grade playing surface, dugouts with locker rooms, and a branded entrance—the players knew this would be a day they would never forget.

The $850,000 renovation was completed by Consolidated Contracting Services (CCSI) and built to honor a man by the name of Dean Harvey, a former baseball player who transferred to Vanguard University in 1985. In the fall of 2011, Harvey tragically passed away from a fatal brain disorder known as Creutzfeldt- Jakob disease. After Harvey’s death his former teammates set out to honor his name by reconstructing the very field they played on years ago. The initial plans moved slowly. However, once a partnership was formed with CCSI things began to take shape.

“Consolidated Contracting Services was key in making our baseball field renovation project a reality.  Their leadership, expertise, and ability to align scope and budget were keys to success,” said the VP of University Advancement, Justin McIntee.

When asked what Harvey would think of the field, former teammate, Jeff Motske, responded by saying, “Dean would be proud of this. He would be so proud of this field and what it is.”

Harvey’s teammates not only wanted to make him proud but to honor the incredible man he was.

Former teammate, Tim Fortugno, added about Harvey, “I really thought of him as man of integrity, a man of honesty, he was just a man who had good character, and there was something just real solid about him.”

In 1985, Harvey led his lions into the College World Series for the first time in Vanguard University history—a memory his teammates would not soon forget.

Motske said, “That team in particular, the ‘85 team, which was the World Series Team, that was just a collection of people who really loved each other and Dean was just a big part of that.”

Harvey and his teammates are not the only ones who were proud to keep Harvey’s legacy alive. The current team members felt a special sense of pride knowing they would be the first to play on a field which has meant so much to so many people.

Shane Elias-Calles, a senior outfielder for Vanguard said, “The field is a true baseball cathedral – far from what it used to be, and a great tribute to Dean Harvey.”

CCSI’s principal, Tony Elias-Calles, also felt the significance of the work his firm recently completed.

“We were honored to be able to work alongside the University and do our part in honoring the legacy of such an incredible man.”
